Are the 1zpresso hand grinders any good?
Let’s Talk About The 1zpresso JMAX And JX-Pro Hand Grinders:
First, a few reasons of why we prefer hand grinders for pour overs and shots of espresso for home use:
In recent years, there has been a tremendous surge in the popularity of third wave coffee. This movement focuses on emphasizing the quality and journey of coffee beans, ultimately delivering a unique and exceptional taste experience. While brewing methods, bean selection, and water quality play significant roles, the often-overlooked hero in extracting the true essence of third wave coffee is the grinder. In this blog, we will explore the advantages of using a quality hand grinder and how it enhances your coffee journey.
1. Precision and Control:
Third wave coffee enthusiasts appreciate the intricacies of their beans, and a quality hand grinder (like the 1zpresso hand grinder) allows for precise control over the grind size. Unlike electric grinders that often produce inconsistent results, hand grinders offer a consistent and uniform grind. This precision ensures that you can extract the optimum flavor from each coffee bean, resulting in a cup that perfectly showcases the unique characteristics of your favorite brew.
2. Enhanced Coffee Aroma:
The aroma of coffee is a key aspect of the overall taste experience. Hand grinders are designed to minimize heat generation during the grinding process, preserving the volatile compounds that contribute to the delightful fragrance of the coffee. With a quality hand grinder, you can savor the vibrant aromas of freshly ground beans, adding another layer of enjoyment to your coffee ritual.
3. Portability and Versatility:
For coffee lovers who enjoy their brew on the go or appreciate a minimalist approach, a quality hand grinder offers incredible portability and versatility. Whether you’re camping, traveling, or simply prefer a smaller kitchen setup, a compact hand grinder is an ideal companion. Its manual operation eliminates the need for electricity, ensuring you can create a delicious cup of third wave coffee wherever and whenever you desire.
4. Consistency in Extraction:
Achieving optimal extraction is crucial in capturing the true essence of third wave coffee. Hand grinders, with their manual operation, enable you to have greater control over the extraction process. By adjusting the grind size to match your brewing method, you can ensure even extraction, leading to a balanced and flavorful cup of coffee every time.
5. Reduced Heat Build-up:
Heat generated during the grinding process can impact the taste of coffee, resulting in a bitter and burnt flavor. Unlike electric grinders that are prone to heat build-up, quality hand grinders produce minimal heat, preserving the delicate flavors of the beans. By maintaining a low grind temperature, you can enjoy a smoother and more nuanced coffee experience, unlocking the intricate flavors hidden within each bean.
What We’ve learned So Far:
Embracing the third wave coffee movement is all about celebrating the journey from bean to cup. Using a quality hand grinder not only aligns with the philosophy of third wave coffee but also allows you to enhance the flavors, aromas, and overall experience of your brew. With precision, control, and portability, alongside minimized heat, a hand grinder becomes an indispensable tool on your quest for the perfect cup of third wave coffee. So, put your hand to the crank, grind your beans with care, and discover the incredible heights of coffee appreciation.
Intro to 1zpresso
The 1zpresso hand grinders have slowly been getting more and more popular with a larger following as people experience the affordability and craftsmanship of the newer brand. To me, this is the in between road if you don’t want to get a Commadante c40 or want something nicer than a TimeMore Chestnut C2.
Pros of the J-MAX
1. Unmatched Grind Consistency: The 1zpresso JMAX Hand Grinder employs a high-quality 48mm stainless steel burr set, ensuring an exceptionally uniform grind size. Whether you prefer a fine or a coarse grind for your filter coffee, this hand grinder provides consistent results, allowing for a more balanced and flavorful extraction. The Burrs are coated in titanium for longer lasting life, and the whole thing feels very sturdy, and good in the hand. It’s got a bit of weight to it, but I like that. The grind consistency is superior to the JX-Pro all day long.
2. Adjustable Grind Settings: With 90 clicks of grind size adjustment, the 1zpresso JMAX allows users to experiment with various brewing methods, but the main method it shines on is espresso. With an 8.8 micron adjustment in between each click, you can REALLY fine-tune this thing to fit all your espresso brewing needs. I Believe the JX Pro is 12 microns in between, which is still great for espresso, but not as fine tuned.
Cons of the J-Max:
I’ve used this thing for one year and some change, and I’ve grown to like it. I actually went from a JX-Pro to this, and the JX-Pro makes much better filter coffee. It does espresso too, but not nearly as well as this model. So, if you’re going the pour over or filtered coffee route, I don’t really recommend this. the occasional pour over is fine, but you won’t win any awards with it. The JX Pro is best for 50/50 filter coffee to espresso. If you do a lot of both, get the JX Pro, but if you want mostly espresso grinds, the JMAX does laps around the JX Pro.
As far as consistency goes, this thing is second to none. Visually, and through results we can see that there are virtually no boulders in our espresso grind, and only a few fines. I’m truly blown away by the precision of this thing. The JX Pro just isn’t as consistent, but some of you may not even tell the difference.
